Postdoctoral Scientist Position available to study microbial extracellular electron transfer


The Girguis lab at Harvard University invites applications for a 2-year postdoctoral research position in microbial ecological physiology. The primary research focus is on fundamentally understanding the evolution, ecology and metabolic activity of microbes capable of extracellular electron transfer. The ideal candidate will have demonstrated expertise and hands-on experience in high-throughput metagenomic and metatranscriptomic analyses including microbial community and functional profiling, proficient in a programming language (Perl, Python and/or R) and familiar with high performance computing. Experience with molecular biological methods such as DNA & RNA purification, PCR and sequencing library preparation is highly desirable. A robust publication record that demonstrate the applicant’s capacities is also highly desirable.
The successful candidate will work closely with research groups in the Dept. of Organismic and Evolutionary Biology (home department) as well as collaborators at the University of Minnesota and the University of Southern California. Some travel may be required, though the frequency and duration are negotiable.

Technician/Senior Technician for manufacturing MFCs


Biological Systems Unit is seeking specialist with experience in engineering, electrochemistry and fermentation processes, who will assist us in upscaling project at OIST. The successful candidate will be responsible for manufacturing MFCs that will be used for water treatment assays. The project will be held for 12-18 months and it may be possible to extend the employment, should the results of the work be satisfying.


1. Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in chemical or biological sciences
2. Understanding of electrochemistry and fermentation processes
3. Communication skills in English, Japanese is an advantage

Full-time, fixed term appointment for 1-1.5 year(s) with a possibility of extension. Contract initially with 3-month probationary period (inclusive). In the case of internship, this is for the fixed 3 months’ period.

Group Leader


A Group Leader position is available in the Biological Systems Unit at the newly established Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology (OIST) to work on MFCs development and other waste water treatment technologies (WWT). 
Our primary R&D focus is on a better understanding of microbial communities in MFCs as a system, together with further optimization and scale-up of the MFC technology. The position holder will be responsible for day to day WWT project management. The project includes installation, running and improvement of MFCs, collecting, processing and analysis the experimental data using metagenomic and metaproteomic technologies. Document all designs, procedures and results.
Supervision of younger researchers and technicians. Preparation of research publications.

Primary R&D focus for the position will be on a better understanding of biological processes in waste water treatment systems, together with further optimization of these technologies using environmental systems and synthetic biology methods.

1) PhD or MSc in a relevant domain, >10 years working experience in a relevant domain and skills to do biotechnological research and at least 2 years of research management or supervisory experience is required.
2) Fluent in English.
3) The candidate is able to communicate well with fellow researchers in similar and other relevant disciplines. The candidate is a team player and enthusiastically to co-supervise junior researchers PhD, MSc students and performing senior research tasks
4) Strong writing and presentation skills.

1) Practical knowledge of metabolic engineering, systems and/or synthetic biology
2) Practical experience with water treatment systems, aerobic, microbial fuel cells or anaerobic digesters (biogas) are considered as an advantage.

Full-time, Fixed term appointment for 2 years with possible extension for 1 year with 3 months probationary period.
